WHY ARE AMERICANS OBESE?

As for what is driving America's chronic weight problem, there are no definite answers. Scientific studies often reach conflicting conclusions, meaning many theories are out there, but the preponderance of evidence points to the two causes most people already suspect: too much food and too little exercise. http://www.publichealth.org/public-awareness/obesity/

Waist Circumference: An Indicator of Obesity Risk

  • Understanding weight risk is important, particularly excess weight carried around your waist.
  • According to CDC, “Excessive abdominal fat is serious, because it increases the risk for developing obesity-related conditions, such as type 2 diabetes, high blood cholesterol, high triglycerides, high blood pressure, and coronary artery disease. Individuals who have excessive abdominal fat should consult with their physicians or other health care providers to develop a plan for losing weight.”
  • Men whose waist circumference is more than 40 inches and non-pregnant women whose waist circumference is more than 35 inches are at greater risk of developing obesity-related conditions.
  • To measure waist size, place a tape measure around the abdomen just above the hip bone. The tape must be snug, but does not compress the skin and is parallel to the floor. Relax, exhale and measure your waist.
