the economy and required leadership skills. This session will
focus on attributes that heighten both personal and organizational
resilience including identification of examples from our own organizations
to make this learning more concrete.

3 Ways to Tell If Your Organization is Ready for Planned Giving
This presentation
will begin by illustrating why it's important to offer donors
deferred giving options and then show leaders how to develop a
Planned Giving Program without trepidation. You don't need to
be a lawyer. If you can understand the characteristics of a few
simple giving vehicles, you can have a successful Planned Giving
Program. This session will provide a tour of bequests and other
giving options that are easy to understand and describe, demonstrating
the best ways to promote and implement them.

This session
would identify common barriers to effective nonprofit collaborations
and provide tools for overcoming them. It would include a checklist
of issues to address in preparation for planning a partnership.
It would also provide suggestions on dealing with these difficult
issues: sharing control over management, developing an exit strategy
for dissatisfied partners, or partners with whom others are dissatisfied,
and balancing competitive or adverse interests of partners. The
emphasis would be on applying tools used by successful business
collaborations to nonprofit issues.

Most nonprofit
boards know they are responsible for board governance (overseeing
the purpose, plans and policies of the organization) and have
a sense of what that means. However, many Executive Directors

governance, and (2) communicate more effectively with their boards
to ensure good board governance.

On May 4, the OBICI Healthcare
Foundation will host a Strategic Priorities Breakfast at the Suffolk
Hilton Garden Inn to review new strategic priorities for health
improvement and explain a new process for the RFP and call for
concept papers. The Planning Council will give a presentation
on health indicators from the 2009 edition of “An Investment
in Priorities,” which will also be available to attendees.
Nonprofit organizations are invited to join us
on May 4 from 8:30 a.m. to noon at the Suffolk Hilton Garden Inn,
100 East Constance Road, Suffolk, VA. Space will be limited and
registration is required. If you are interested in attending,

Award

Agent in Charge Alex J. Turner of the Norfolk Field Office of
the FBI is pleased to announce his selection of Ms. Veronica McMillian
as the local recipient of the FBI’s 2009 Director’s
Community Leadership Award. Ms.
McMillian is the founder of a community-based, non-profit organization
known as Let’s Talk Inc., which provides educational and
job training, violence prevention programs, and develops role
models for young men and women.

Nurses phone calls help patients lower blood pressure in study
As Congress weighs options for cutting some of the $2.2 trillion Americans spend on doctors, surgeries, treatments and drugs, some solutions may be as simple as a phone call.
A team of Duke University Medical Center doctors and nurses has found they can help lower patients' blood pressure with a do-it-yourself monitoring plan and bi-monthly phone calls from a nurse.
